Prof. Dr. med. vet.Chris Walzer, DECZM (wildlife population health) - Communicating on the Science-Conservation-Policy Interfaces in a New World
Dr Chris Walzer is the Exec. Director of Health at the Wildlife Conservation Society. He is a board-certified wildlife veterinarian, professor of Conservation Medicine at the University of Veterinary Medicine in Vienna, Austria. Author of more than 100 research publications, numerous book chapters, lecturing widely on health and conservation. Chris has an internationally recognized diverse One Health expertise, working with wildlife, on the human-livestock-wildlife interfaces, gained from combined years of leadership and research in Europe, Asia and Africa. His work has recently focused on the nexus of emerging zoonotic-origin pathogens environmental encroachment and the commercial wildlife trade. He acts as a consultant in wildlife and conservation matters for numerous organizations. Over the past decade; he has led several successful large-scale EU-funded ecological connectivity and biodiversity conservation projects in the Alps. Chris is the recipient of several research and service awards most notably the Distinguished Environmentalist Award from the Mongolian Ministry of Nature and Environment for contributions to the conservation of Mongolia's rare and endangered species. Dr. Ruth Cromie, WWT Research Fellow, Chair UN-African Eurasian Waterbird Agreement (AEWA) Technical Committee - Communication for change on use of lead ammunition: a case study of carrots and sticks, people and paintings, papers and paramotors
I may have started with the immunological and microbiological technologies of disease prevention with vaccine development for avian mycobacteriosis but, via wildlife disease ecology, I am now much more interested in the bigger and more generic means by which you manage the system differently and get behaviour change to achieve healthy outcomes. This has involved pushing for policy change (often through multilateral environmental agreements), or capacity building and production of guidance on how to prevent disease in habitats such as wetlands. Although my first love is infectious disease, our science on lead poisoning has ensured that I am now embroiled in consigning lead ammunition to history to reduce exposures not only to wildlife but also domestic animals, soils and importantly people. This has led me into engaging with multiple national and international stakeholder groups and full use of all those much needed ‘soft skills’.

Sacha Dench -Flight of the Swans – How blood, sweat, tears and media engaged the masses in saving a species
Sacha is a pioneering conservationist, record-breaking adventurer and founder of Conservation without Borders. With a career spanning roles from wildlife geneticist to running a film and photography unit, a pollution and waste inspector, to Head of Public Relations for different organisations worldwide, her speciality is communication of complex conservation issues in inspiring ways.
